Angus

ANGUS ALMOST ADDED, ‘Perhaps I’ll tell you one night,’ but he bit his tongue before he could say it. He didn’t need any more complications in his life. Besides, Misty would move on soon. He’d seen it over and over through the years. Couples, singles, grey nomies, they came to town, enjoyed the surroundings, stocked up and moved on to the next coastal village. They’d follow the sun north for the winter.

Angus fought back the jealousy. Such a free life with no commitment to responsibility. He could live that way for a year or ten.

‘You’d like to travel the road too?’

He looked at her, surprised that she’d almost read his thoughts.

‘I think it would be a wonderful way to live, but my responsibilities don’t allow it.’

She was quiet for a moment, and when she looked up at him, her eyes were sad. ‘So many of us get caught in the trap of doing what’s expected of us, we let opportunities go.’

A tinge of irritation crept in. What did she know of responsibility? Travelling in a beat-up old Coaster van with a dog for company, not working and doing what she wanted, when she wanted.

His voice was short. ‘Have you finished your coffee? I’ll take your mug back and leave you in peace to take your photo.’

‘Don’t you want to watch the sunrise?’

He did, but Angus was feeling cross with himself, and strangely, also with Misty because of the jealousy niggling at him.

‘I do, but I can see it from over there just as well.’

‘Please don’t go. It’s nice to have company.’ She drained her coffee and put the mug on the railing at the side of the lookout and then switched on her camera.

Angus hesitated and then decided to stay. They could be quiet and just enjoy the moment.

He took a deep breath as the edge of the clouds above the horizon took on a golden lining. A perfect balanced formation of cumulonimbus clouds sat above the horizon and, as the rising sun lit them from beneath, the clouds turned a soft pink.

The silence between Misty and Angus became comfortable, and he heard her draw in a deep breath too. As the sun split the horizon a shaft of golden light reared to the heavens in one of the most spectacular sights he had ever witnessed at sunrise.

Calm stole over him and all thoughts of Sean, his work, and this unwanted attraction left him.

Strangely, Becky Barber came into his thoughts, and he knew in the calm of that moment there was a solution to all his problems.

If only.
